Reading Proficiency Exam

The Department of French and Italian will offer an examination of reading competency in French and Italian to graduate students from other departments. The examination will be held on Monday, November 8th, 2021 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 p.m. Room TBA
Please come 10 minutes early so we can start the exam on time.

Please Note:   The Reading Proficiency exam is only offered once a year and that there will be no make-up exam.  If you have to take the exam this year, make sure you make the appropriate arrangement.

Format of the Proficiency Examinations 

  1. Translation of a short passage (35 lines) of scholarly prose in the humanities or social sciences.
  2. Two questions in English on this passage (French exam only)
  3. Use of a Bilingual dictionary is permitted (paper version only)
  4. No use of grammar books or course books permitted
  5. Duration: 60 minutes

PLEASE NOTE: In the summer, the Graduate School offers a course in French at the graduate level which is taught by members of this department, but administered through the Graduate School.   Successful completion of this course entitles a student to a reading proficiency certification.
