The Department of French and Italian presents Andrew Curran, Wesleyan University, "Race and Enlightenment."

Andrew Curran’s research has focused on a variety of topics related to Denis Diderot, human monstrosity, the history of race, and the science of French empire. His most recent book, The Anatomy of Blackness: Science and Slavery in an Era of Enlightenment was published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 2011 and translated in French by Classiques Garnier in 2017. His next book, a biography of Diderot entitled Diderot and the Art of Thinking Freely, will come out in October 2018 at Other Press/Random House. More recently, he received a Public Scholar fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities and was made a Chevalier dans l’ordre des Palmes Académiques, both in 2016.
