L'Avant-Scène, Princeton University Department of French and Italian's French theater workshop, will present a shortened version of Le Pays lointain by Jean-Luc Lagarce, directed by Florent Masse, on October 17 through 19, at 8pm in the Whitman College Class of 1970 theater.
In Le Pays lointain Lagarce continues exploring the theme of the return of the prodigal son, a central topic in his body of work. In the play that blends the past with the present, Louis returns home, and tries to announce the news of his forthcoming death. Through his journey, we discover more about his past love life and the last twenty years of his life.
The production will feature advanced L'Avant-Scène students Nicholas Shashkini 21, Jianing Zhao 20, James Facon 21, Jane Sul 20, Elyssa Schaeffer GS, Jason Qu 21, Meigan Clark 22, Isabelle Chen GS and Benjamin Lemoine.
Jean-Luc Lagarce was a director, actor, playwright, and essayist. His work is among the most played in France, and has been met with popular and critical acclaim. Family, disappearance, unveiling, and revelation are at the heart of his work. He died of AIDS aged 38 after writing his final play, Le Pays lointain (The Faraway Country).
