Reading Proficiency Exam

The Department of French and Italian will offer an examination of reading competency in French and Italian to graduate students from other departments. The examination will be held online. It will be available on Canvas from 8:00 A.M. to 11:59 P.M. EST on Wednesday, November 1st, 2023.

Please Note:   The Reading Proficiency exam is only offered once a year and that there will be no make-up exam.  If you have to take the exam this year, make sure you make the appropriate arrangement.

Format of the Proficiency Examinations 

  1. Translation of a short passage (35 lines) of scholarly prose in the humanities or social sciences.
  2. Two questions in English on this passage.
  3. Use of a Bilingual dictionary is permitted (paper version only)
  4. No use of grammar books or course books permitted
  5. Duration: 90 minutes

PLEASE NOTE: In the summer, the Princeton Center for Language Study offers courses in French and Italian at the graduate level. Successful completion of this course entitles a student to a reading proficiency certification.
